Last Thursday I discovered my NAS was having issues.
Starting the day to warning beeps from the NAS and discovery of a failed drive
The beeping turned out to have resulted in some emails overnight.

The NAS is a Synology DS920+ which I’ve had for a couple of years, and pretty happy with so far. I’ve swapped out two of four drives so far, to increase available storage – late last year.
In Synology DSM Control Panel, under Hardware & Power – General – Beep Control, I had Volume or SSD cache is abnormal checked, resulting in the beeps (there was an option showing the reason for the current beep, and to mute it). Since I have the email notifications as well, I’ve now switched this off.
So it was drive 3 that was showing issues, and that was one of the two drives I’d upgraded back in November 2023!
I debated how to handle this one. Previously, I’ve been buying drives in pairs. On Thursday, I ordered just one replacement for the same model (a WD Red Plus 12Tb drive), and planned to RMA the one I have under warranty. I expected the replacement to arrive sometime the following week since I didn’t pay extra for Saturday delivery – but surprisingly, it was delivered on Saturday morning.
I pulled the faulty drive; swapped in the replacement; told DSM Storage Manager to repair. And then, we went out to a social event! Synology sat and did what it needed to resync the drives.
I’m annoyed with the drive failure (I’ve got the RMA stuff done, and will ship in for a replacement tomorrow), but that has been a quick and easy replacement.
